Chad: J’ai adoré la saga “Lord of the rings”. J’ai vu récemment “Shaun of the Dead” et je l’ai beaucoup apprécié aussi. Sinon, d’autres films comme « Kill Bill », « The devil’s backbone », et « Donnie Darko ». - Maintenant notre question habituelle. ENGLISH VERSION - Hi, Can you first introduce yourselves ? Your story (born location, studies..) and your way to Hollywood ? Matt: My name is Matt Rose. I was born in Northern CA. I started making monsters when I was eleven years old. When I was out of high school Steve Wang and I started our own Mask business. That lasted for about a year. I moved to LA when I was nineteen working on Aliens for a model company run by Bob and Dennis Skotak, then for Stan Winston on the same film. Chad: I am Chad Waters. I was born and raised in Southern California. I completed two years of College before getting a job on the movie Batman Returns. I was hired at the ³Bat-shop², the name given to the building where all the batsuits were created. - Which is the better way to get into FX business ? Are there specials schools for that ? Matt: There are schools, but the most creative people I¹ve worked with are all self taught. Practicing and learning with other creative and generous people. Chad: The best way to get into the FX business is having a solid portfolio of artwork. Your artwork speaks for itself. It also helps to have a good attitude. There are makeup effects schools but I don¹t know many people who have gone to them. Most of the stuff they teach can be learned through books and videos. There seems to be a lot of makeup instructional videos out today but I¹m not sure if they¹re any good. - Now that CGI special effects invades the movies, is there always the same place for most traditional makeup effects ? Which are the tools you used in order to build such fantastic makeup as Hellboy face ?? Matt: I believe there will always be a place for traditional makeup effects as well as digital effects. On Hellboy we had an amazing relationship with the digital effects department, especially Ed Irastorza, Dave Van Dyke, and Blair Clarke. We helped each other out whenever possible. That was my first mutually cooperative experience I¹ve had with visual effects, they were great guys. With Hellboy¹s makeup it all started with Ron Perlman. Chad and I always knew that he was the only choice for the part. Guillermo and Mike Mignola thought so too. So between studying Mike¹s beautiful comics and Ron¹s past performances I sculpted in clay what I thought Hellboy would look like in 3D. Guillermo liked it, Mike liked it, and Ron liked it. Chad: It seems that CGI works the best in conjunction with traditional makeup/creature effects the same way that traditional makeup/creature effects work best when enhanced with CGI. In other words, they should work together. The more directors like Guillermo del Toro, who believes in combining the two almost equally, the better. The tools we used to create Hellboy were very traditional. His face, neck and chest were all foam-latex. In the shots were Hellboy is bare-chested, foam-latex was also used. The rest of the time he wore a lightweight muscle suit hand carved out of couch foam. Hellboy¹s stone arm was not made of rock. The mechanical, radio controlled hand was made of a carbon-fiber barrel and palm with foam-latex fingers. The stunt hands (for bashing walls and fighting) were latex and polyfoam. We had different tails also; Foam-latex for the mechanical tails and a durable fast-flex tail for stunts. His teeth were made from dental acrylic. The wigs were tied by the great Sylvia Nava. The rest was Ron. - You contributed on many very big production such as Aliens, Batman Returns ... Which are your best memories ?? Matt: My best memories are the projects that Chad and I have collaborated on: Mikey from Men in Black, Mighty Joe Young and especially Hellboy .We headed up these characters. And although Hellboy was the toughest film I¹ve worked on it is also the most rewarding. Chad: I have many great memories. I will never forget my first big movie experience. I¹ve always a comic book fan so working on Batman Returns was extra special. Men in Black was an important movie for me. It was the first movie I worked with Matt on. Since then we have worked on many more projects and have formed our own company, GrimmGrottoGoods. I have met many great people over the years and too many great memories to write about. - Now let's speak about your work on Hellboy (it's going into theatres in august in France). How did you get involved in this project ? Chad: It was a long road getting to work on Hellboy. It all started about 5 years ago when I first heard that a script was being worked on for Hellboy. Being a big fan of the comic, I knew it¹d be a lot of fun to work on. So I showed the comic book to Matt to hopefully get him interested. It worked. We were working at Rick Baker¹s at the time, so the two of us lobbied to get the show in the shop. I contacted Guillermo through Ain¹t it Cool News and set up a meeting at Cinovation (Rick Baker studios). We worked for free after hours on Hellboy concept art to help Guillermo del Toro at his pitch meetings. Matt sculpted a quick concept makeup on an old cast of Ron Perlman from Beauty and the Beast that was dead on. He basically designed the look of Hellboy in three hours. Guillermo held him to that exact sculpture. When Guillermo finally got the movie going many years later he hired us, through the shop, to create the character of Hellboy. Matt: When Chad showed me the comic book, Seed of Destruction, I flipped out! It was so beautiful and so well written with the title character being so cool. I started a maquette (clay study) at home trying to understand Hellboy in 3D. It turned out awful. I then tried a sculpture on a head cast of Ron. Then Chad and I worked on a second maquette that turned out better, as a matter of fact we were literally finishing it moments before our first meeting with Guillermo. He was enthusiastic and seemed happy with the work. That was almost five years ago. - On screen, Hellboy creature is perhaps the better comic hero ever created. Ron Perlman is Hellboy ! Can you think another actor can play the demon detective ?? Matt: For me, no one else could play Hellboy. Ron brought so much energy, power, sensitivity, humanity and respect to the character. It was an honor and pleasure working with him. Chad: We never envisioned anyone else but Ron. At one point, it looked like the studio (not Revolution) wanted to go with a big name to play Hellboy. When Matt and I heard this, we kind of lost interest. But Guillermo believed in Ron and kept fighting until a new studio, Revolution, believed in Ron too. Ron is Hellboy; it just couldn¹t be anyone else. - What do you think about the final result on Guillermo's movie ? Matt: It¹s very close to me, maybe too close to be very objective, but I love the movie. I¹ve watched it more than 10 times and still enjoy it. Guillermo was the best director that I have ever worked with. He was on top of every aspect of the movie. And I think that shows. Chad: Hellboy is one of the few movies that I have worked on that I can say that I love. A lot of people put their heart into this movie, especially Guillermo. All the hard work is on the screen. Guillermo really pulled it off. I am very proud to be a part of it. - Have you ever read any Hellboy comic book before working on this movie ? Are you comics book fans ? Chad: I was a fan of the Hellboy comic before working on the movie. If I weren¹t a fan, I probably wouldn¹t have guessed how cool of a movie it could be. A lot of people are fans now! That¹s one of the great thing about the movie-it might create more comic books fans. At least fans of Mike Mignola. Everybody should be a fan of Mignola. Matt: I never was much of a comic fan. I liked many artists, Bernie Wrightson and Frank Frazetta especially. But when Chad showed me Hellboy I was hooked. Still am. A while ago when Chad and I were in New York we had lunch with Mike Mignola and he showed us some pencil work for the latest Hellboy story. They were amazing. I became a drooling comic fan. - Which are your future projects ? Will you work on Hellboy 2 ? Or on other projects?? Matt: I would really love to work with Guillermo and Ron again. The whole Hellboy crew was terrific. Chad: I am not sure what the future holds for us. I hope we can work on Hellboy 2. It was a great experience working on the first Hellboy; it¹d be nice to do it again. - Chad and Matt, following your career is very impressive. Do you think about taking a new way in movie creation or continue to create makeup for fantastic movies ? Matt: We are trying to get some other projects going. I still really enjoy doing makeup FX. But I would enjoy it more being our own bosses. Hellboy was a great challenge and very draining. I took a long time off afterwards. But recently Chad did some personal designs for himself that I ended up sculpting. I haven¹t been so jazzed since Hellboy. So I know I¹m not retiring anytime soon. Chad: We¹d like to branch out into other aspects of the movie industry. We¹ve been writing a lot lately as well as developing a television series. We also have toys coming out in September that we¹ve been busy with. The toy line is called When Puppets Attack!!. They¹re based on zombie puppets we made for one of our short films. We partnered with Sota Toys to bring them to the market. Our jobs as makeup effects artists are not very stable anymore. We have to look into other lines of work. - You create your own comedy universe with "When Zombies attacks !". What is the history of this project ? Is it going to be shown on European TV ? Matt: Chad and I are both big zombie movie fans and wanted to do a project on the side, after hours and weekends. It¹s sort of therapy for us. Not all movie projects are rewarding. Originally, we were planning to shoot a very dark short film with a scary zombie in it. But decided instead to do a take on reality T.V. It¹s like seeing footage of a wild bear trapped in someone¹s swimming pool on the news. Except instead of bears it¹s zombies. It follows a group of officers who take care of supernatural delinquents. Chad: When Zombies Attack!! was a way to blow off steam. Matt and I wanted to do some kind of short film with zombies. We wanted to do it fast so we ruled out shooting it on film. We knew that most movies shot on video look cheesy so we decided that if we shot it reality T.V. style we could get away with the video look. We just did it for fun. Because our main actor, Frank Rydberg, was so great, we decided to take the project more seriously. Over a period of about two years or so, Matt and I wrote scripts, created makeups, made the props, etc. We then shot and edited it in our free time. That¹s why it took so long. We never thought this would turn into something more than just for fun. We¹ve had a lot of positive feedback for When Zombies Attack!! People like Guillermo del Toro and Frank Darabont have been very supportive and encouraging. It now has a cult following and we are trying to make a T.V. series out of it. When Zombies Attack!! has been shown on MTV UK. At one point they were talking to us about doing a series with them. It¹s been a slow process at MTV UK. I don¹t know if anything will end up happening but it¹s nice that they are interested - Which was your favourite movie over the last 5 years ? Matt: I would say The Sixth Sense. It still scares the crap out of me. When we got home from Prague. Chad¹s finance, Melissa, took us to see Finding Nemo and Kill Bill. I thought they were both great. Chad: I really enjoyed the Lord of Rings movies. Talk about movies with a lot of heart. I recently saw Shaun of the Dead and really liked it. Other great movies were Kill Bill, The Devil¹s Backbone and Donnie Darko. - Now our usual question. If you could get the budget you want. Which movie would you love to direct ? Matt: Our own. Chad and I have been working on our own projects and are keeping our fingers crossed. Geek Love would be a cool movie to make. Chad: We¹ve got a couple of original scripts going that we¹d love to make if given the opportunity. A movie based on the video game Silent Hill or Fatal Frame would be great to do also. Really spooky stuff. Although, I¹m sure they¹re probably being made already. - Anything you would like to add ? Matt: I would say go see Hellboy. It¹s a wonderful film and many people put a lot into it. And thank you. Chad: Yeah, go see Hellboy! Also if you¹re interested in our latest endeavors you can check our website: www.whenzombiesattack.com We try to update it when something interesting comes up.
